it's strange to think how attached to something we might actually be...
im still a kid at heart-- or perhaps i just like to have something nice and soft to cuddle while i sleep:
Blue Blankie: when i was born, i was brought home from the hospital, in my first blue blankie, he was my nighttime companion. when i was about 6 years old, a very sad day came. for reasons that i cant remember, i was very sick and in the hospital, i remember not being able to fall alseep, and how mom stayed in the bed next to me just so i wouldnt be alone. i threw up one night and the nurses came to change the sheets... and that was the last i ever saw of blue blankie #1! the nurses gathered up the sheets to wash them, and took blue blankie with them by mistake... i never got blue blankie back....
im not sure how long after the tragic accident happened, but i magically received a wonderful duplicate of blue blankie. blue blankie #2 is, to this day, still with me... (infact, he is draped around my neck right now, just like a scarf).
i love my blue blankie, he goes everywhere with me! i take him when i leave town, when i go on vacations, when i eat breakfast... he is always there, usually around my neck, like a scarf. and yes, i STILL, to this day, sleep with my blue blankie!
Nightmare Bear: at about 9 years old, my grandma thalia gave me what i like to call my "Nightmare Bear". this bear was actually a present from her mom.. it was a present for "the two girls". my cousin Stephanie also got a bear. i remember gran calling me into her room, and letting me help her open a box, she said... "now there are 2 bears in here; one is for you, and the other for Stephanie". i was so excited! in the box there were indeed 2 bears, they both had PJs on and nightcaps. one bear had yellow PJs, and the other blue. being about 9 years old, i figured my eyes were blue, so my favorite color must be blue, and i choose my "Nightmare Bear".
where did his name come from you ask??? i remember having awful dreams, and i knew there had to be an end to the dreams- i named my bear "nightmare bear" to chase all the nightmares away. and he did!
nightmare bear spent so many nights with me, that his lace around his pjs were falling off, his eyes were getting all scratched, his little pj cap was begining to fall off.. gran would of course mend him back together for me.
i remember being afraid of the house being on fire, but i knew what one thing i would grab, it would be nightmare bear.. infact, for a while i even had a string type thing to hook to my hand so that if it was dark and we had to get out fast, i wouldnt have to look for him, he would be right by my side. he mostly stays home for the small trips, but when there is a big move, he will be right by my side. nightmare bear has retired to the shelve, but he still looks over me at night, and he is always there for a big squeeze when i need him!
Disney Bear: while i was working at Disney World, i was able to meet some of my very best friends! i had to go back home earlier than the rest of them did, so they decided to get me a going-away gift.. it was disney bear- disney bear is so special to me because he is a reminder of what great friends i have, and how much they cared for me in florida(and he is ohhh so cuddly!). disney bear is also kind of like a friendship keychain, we all have one... mine is a nice light brown, Frankies is pink, Shanyes is black, and Keri's is blue.
about a year after i had my disney bear something horrible happened; his neck ruptured, causing his head to (almost) pop off!!!! i did my best with my sewing skills to try to put him back together, but it was a short-term fix.... he had to retire to the shelve... he wasnt capable of cuddling. eventually i got sick of not being able to have my disney bear at my squishing will, and sent him to the Operating Room(..our neighbor Heidi is a fabulous seamstress!)!!!!!! it was touch and go for a while, but Disney Bear will be alright!!! he is still feeling a little 'loosey goosey' from the surgery, but he will be just fine!! its good to finally have him back to me, ready to be cuddle-smoothered!!!
Lambie: im actually not so sure what makes lambie so special... mom and i got lambie at a Kohls... prob 2 years ago. i think i like him mostly because he is soft. lambie can also sit on my head, and he is easy to carry around by his hoof. he also likes to come to breakfast, and he enjoys sliding off the banister! yes, i realize i'm 22 years old, but i do love lambie! he came with a little 'mini lambie' too, but i cant sleep with the mini, i might roll over him, and that would be bad.. so he keeps Nightmare Bear company.
after remembering why each of these nighttime comforts mean so much to me, i cant help but crawl into bed tonight with arms full of childhood love.
- what are some of your childhood securities?
- do you still have them?
- if so, where are they now?
